Got (Soy) Milk?

It’s time to talk about Soy Milk.

Although we all know the ins and outs of dairy, just how much do you know about the welfare of the soy beans exploited for their milk? From farm to glass, the process of dairy is transparent, and the public are kept purposely informed so that they know for sure that what they pour over their cereal and froth with their coffee each day is nutritious, environmentally friendly and beneficial to the cows involved.

We don’t need to tell you that like human mothers, mother cows need to give birth and be repeatedly kept pregnant to continually produce milk. It’s well known that they’re forcibly impregnated by a farmer inserting his arm into her rectum and then depositing in her uterus the semen that was extracted from a bull made excitable by an electro-ejaculator. We all know that her baby is then taken away from her within 24 hours of birth, as mother nature would never intend the milk to be meant for her child, but to be poured over a bowl of Cheerios. Any time the calf spends with it's mother is lost money for farmers, and less cream on our cakes.

Naturally if her child is male it won’t produce milk, so it is better off dead. Male calf’s prefer to be humanely shot at birth so as not to be a financial burden for the loving farmers that brought them into this world. This may sound silly to some, but if it was female it would go through the same process as her mother and be repeatedly forcibly impregnated and milked until the trauma inflicted upon her takes its toll and her milk output declines, forcing farmers to send her to a slaughterhouse at around 4 years of age to be bolt gunned in the head and have her throat cut to be used for cheap meat - a wonderful recognition of her devoted life service. A cows natural lifespan is around 20 years, so they are given a pretty good run, with their welfare at the forefront of our minds at all times. Some male calf’s are even kept alive for up to 24 weeks, to have an opportunity to be killed and sold as veal.

Some soft souls may think that this all sounds rather cruel, but it’s entirely necessary as although around 65% of humans globally are lactose intolerant, we are unable to survive without the milk from cows. It contains calcium - which although found in abundance in Soy, beans, peas, lentils, seeds, nuts, grains, leafy greens, vegetables, seaweed and fortified plant milks - they're not recommended by dairy lobbyists, making it impossible for our bodies to absorb the required amounts of calcium from anything other than the milk from a cow. Next time you go to the dairy isle at a supermarket just look at all the cartons and packets of milk and cheese and see the pictures and cartoons of happy cows and rest assured that they wouldn’t be depicted that way if they weren’t in fact happy. Unfortunately, we are yet to come across a soy milk carton from any brand that depicts their soy beans as happy, so we can only be left to assume that the soy farmers don’t give a damn about their well being. We want to clean the industry up by making soybeans on the cartons look happier, and with your support we hope to make this a reality.
